A clear, science-grounded guide to what facials do for your skin, the main types, how often to get them, and how to pick the right one.
A friendly guide to the quick add-on treatments worth booking alongside your facial or hair appointment and how to get the best results.

Some of the most satisfying salon moments aren't the headline service, they're the quick add-ons that pull your whole look together: neat brows, smooth skin, tidy nails, a refreshed glow. They're fast, affordable, and easy to pair with a facial or hair appointment. Here's a friendly run-through of the most popular add-ons, what each is great for, and how to get the best, safest results.
Threading uses a twisted cotton thread to lift hair out at the follicle. Its superpower is precision, it's brilliant for shaping eyebrows and tidying fine facial hair (upper lip, chin, sides), giving clean, defined lines.1 Because it removes hair from the root, results last longer than shaving, typically a few weeks.
Best for: eyebrow shaping, upper lip, facial areas where precision matters.
Lasts: roughly two to four weeks before regrowth.
Good to know: hygiene and skilled technique matter, done poorly it can irritate, so a trained therapist makes all the difference.2
Waxing removes hair from the root across larger areas, leaving skin smooth for longer than shaving, usually a few weeks.1 It's the practical choice for arms, legs and larger zones, and pairs naturally with a salon visit.
Best for: arms, legs, and larger areas you want smooth and low-maintenance.
Lasts: around three to six weeks depending on the area and your hair cycle.
Good to know: to reduce ingrown hairs and bumps, gentle exfoliation between sessions and good aftercare help, more on the why in our skin-science add-ons guide.2
A de-tan treatment targets the dullness and darkening that come from sun exposure. When UV hits your skin, it triggers extra melanin, the pigment that darkens skin as a natural defence.5 A de-tan exfoliates and brightens to lift dull surface cells and even out tone, leaving skin fresher and more radiant. It's a lovely add-on before an event.
Make your de-tan actually last
A de-tan refreshes your skin, but without daily broad-spectrum sunscreen the tan simply comes back, because the trigger (UV) is still there.5,6 Sunscreen is the single best way to protect the result, we'll always recommend it.
A manicure and pedicure aren't just about colour, they tidy nails and cuticles, smooth rough skin, and leave hands and feet feeling cared-for. The single most important thing to look for is hygiene: properly cleaned and sterilised tools and clean foot-baths, which is exactly what protects you from the infections that poor nail-salon practices can cause.3
Best for: neat, healthy-looking nails; smoothing rough heels; a polished finish.
Good to know: the American Academy of Dermatology advises not shaving your legs in the 24 hours before a pedicure, since tiny nicks raise infection risk.3
Ear piercing is a quick, popular add-on and the results come down to clean technique and good aftercare. Earlobe piercings typically heal in about six to eight weeks, while cartilage piercings take much longer (often several months).4 Following simple aftercare keeps healing smooth and lowers the risk of irritation or bumps. We cover the full aftercare in our skin-science add-ons guide.
Add-ons aren't just for women, they're some of the most popular finishing touches for men too. Eyebrow tidying and ear/nose detailing by threading give a sharp, groomed look; waxing handles areas that are awkward to maintain; a de-tan refreshes skin that takes a lot of sun; and a clean-up manicure or pedicure keeps hands and feet presentable. As a unisex salon, this is exactly the kind of quick, no-fuss grooming we build into a visit at Diana & Dapper.
Half the appeal of add-ons is stacking the right ones for the occasion. A few combinations clients love:
Event-ready glow: a brightening or de-tan facial + threading for sharp brows + a manicure for polished hands.
Bridal prep: a planned series of facials in the weeks before, with threading and waxing timed a few days ahead so skin settles, plus mani-pedi close to the day.
Low-maintenance refresh: waxing for smooth skin + a quick de-tan + a tidy pedicure.
Grooming reset: haircut + brow threading + a clean-up facial in one sitting.
Timing matters for events: schedule hair removal a few days in advance rather than the same day, so any temporary redness has time to calm.2
Time-efficient: tidy brows or nails while you're already in the chair.
A complete look: smooth skin, neat brows and polished nails finish off a fresh haircut or facial.
Consistency: one trusted salon that knows your preferences and keeps hygiene standards high.
Hygiene first, sterilised or single-use tools and clean stations.3
Trained technicians, skill prevents irritation and gives cleaner results.2
Honest advice, a good salon tells you when to wait (e.g. irritated skin) or see a doctor.
Aftercare guidance, simple steps to protect your results.
Both remove hair from the root, so both outlast shaving, typically a few weeks. Threading is best for precise areas like brows; waxing is more practical for larger areas like arms and legs.1
Gentle cleansing, light exfoliation between sessions, and not working over irritated skin all help. Ingrown hairs are more common with root-removal methods, so good aftercare matters.2
No, it refreshes and brightens, but UV keeps triggering melanin, so daily sunscreen is essential to keep tan from returning.5,6
Choose a salon with sterilised or single-use tools and clean foot-baths, and avoid shaving your legs in the 24 hours before a pedicure.3
Add-ons are the finishing touches that make a salon visit feel complete, quick, affordable and genuinely satisfying when done well. The two things that matter most are hygiene and skilled hands, both of which we take seriously at Diana & Dapper.
